Rory Cowan announced he was leaving Mrs Brown Boys in July 2017.

He quit following the sold-out Mrs Brown Tour in the summer of 2017.

Rory Cowan played the gay hairdresser son of Mrs Brown and left the series following a period of him not being “happy” on the comedy.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Mail, Cowan revealed he had wanted to quit the show but was persuaded to stay by Brendan O’Carroll, who plays Mrs Brown.

He said: “I hadn't been happy working for Mrs Brown's Boys company for the last 18 months to two years. I feel that 26 years is enough so I decided it was time to go.“

He added: ”I told Brendan on June 16 about my decision to leave. That's when I handed in my notice.

“I was supposed to leave at the end of that week, but Brendan said that would be impossible and asked if I'd stay on until the end of the London O2 gigs. So I agreed to that.

“I'm not going into details about why I was unhappy. I did the final show, packed my stuff into a small Waitrose plastic bag and just left the venue.”

Cowan confirmed there were no hard feelings between him and O’Carroll, who he has known for 26 years.

After Cowan quit the show, O’Carroll issued a statement which read: ”To all of us it feels like Ronaldo leaving Manchester United. But Ronaldo went on to amazing success which I know Rory will too.

“I can't even quantify the contribution Rory has made to our success and the well-being of me and my family, not just on-screen or stage but way before that as a friend and a driving force in getting us here.“

WHAT HAPPENED TO RORY ON MRS BROWN'S BOYS?

After compelling Mrs Brown’s Boys stage door, Cowan did not appear in the 2017 Christmas special and has not featured in the show since.

Cowan’s character Rory was replaced by Damien McKiernan in Christmas specials.

Speaking on the Ray D’Arcy Show on RTE Radio One, Cowan said he was not interested in watching his replacement.

He also revealed that the had gotten “bored” of Mrs Brown’s Boys.

He said: “I wasn't curious at all. I’m passed it, I’m gone, I’m doing something else!”

Cowan explained: “These things are just there every single year, and it bored me. Once it became a format on the BBC, you couldn't move out of that format, everything had to stay the same... and that became a bore to me, I didn't like it.

“I really got very, very bored with it.”
