Mrs Brown’s Boys: What happened to Rory on Mrs Brown’s Boys?

MRS BROWN’S BOYS is back today for its highly-anticipated Christmas Special. Last year long-standing cast member Rory Cowan was replaced by another actor. But why did he leave?

The annual Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas Special is back on tonight (Tuesday, December 25) on BBC One. Brendan O’Carroll is back as the outrageous matriarch for the special which is titled, Mrs Brown’s Boys: Exotic Mammy. Fans will notice that long-time cast member Rory Cowan won’t be starring in the episode.

What happened to Rory on Mrs Brown’s Boys?

Rory Cowan, who played Rory Brown left Mrs Brown’s Boys, in 2017 after 26 years as part of the sitcom and stage show.

The 59-year-old had worked with the show’s creator Brendan O’Carroll since 1992.

He played Agnes Brown’s (played by Brendan O’Carroll) gay hairdresser son and left the series following a period of him not being “happy” on the comedy.

Though the parting was amicable, Cowan told the Irish Daily Mail last year: “I told Brendan on June 16 about my decision to leave. That’s when I handed in my notice.

“I was supposed to leave at the end of that week, but Brendan said that would be impossible and asked if I’d stay on until the end of the London O2 gigs. So I agreed to that.”

Previously, the Irish Sun reported that Cowan said that he felt playing Rory Brown felt like a “chore”.

“I hadn’t been happy working for the Mrs Brown’s Boys company for the last 18 months to two years,” he said.

“I feel that 26 years is enough so I decided it was time to go. I’m not going into details about why I was unhappy.”

McKiernan is starring in the Christmas Special this year.

What will happen in Mrs Brown’s Boys: Exotic Mammy?

The synopsis for Mrs Brown’s Boys: Exotic Mammy reads: “It’s the festive season once again in the Brown household, and Father Damian (Conor Moloney) has organised a Christmas decoration contest to support the local football team.

“Agnes is keen to enter, especially as it might mean getting one over her old nemesis, Hilliary Nicholson (Susie Blake).

“But she is soon distracted, when Dermot (Paddy Houlihan) and Buster (Danny O'Carroll) give Agnes a ‘wifi assistant’ and she has trouble figuring out what to do with it.

“Meanwhile, Cathy (Jennifer Gibney) is up for a promotion at work and Dino (Gary Hollywood) and Rory give Buster a full makeover, so he can look the best for his internet date.

“It’s bound to go well, as long as she looks like she does in her photo…”
