Mrs Brown’s Boys star Brendan O'Carroll has shared that matriarch Agnes Brown will wrestle with depression in the eagerly awaited new series.
The hit comedy show – created by and starring actor and comedian O’Carroll – is returning in September with its first new series in a decade.
And the star revealed that fans will see Agnes dealing with her mental health as the series gets underway, while grandad will have to contend with constipation.
OK! quoted him as saying: “I’d never done Agnes as depressed and everybody gets depressed at some point. I wanted to make sure that Agnes did contact the doctor, as that’s what you have to do when you’re depressed, you can’t handle it on your own.”
“But as well as that, of course it had to be funny!” said the 67-year-old.
“So, at the same time the doctor is trying to cure Agnes’s depression, he’s also trying to cure grandad’s constipation.”
The show last aired a full series in 2013, although there have been several specials at Christmas over the last few years.
O’Carroll said the fact the upcoming series was not tied to the festive season meant that he could be a bit “freer” when he was penning it.
The TV star previously said in a statement that the mini-series was actually originally planned for 2021, but that it got pushed back.
“Having been thwarted twice, firstly by Covid-19 and then by a post Covid shortage of studios, it’s fantastic to, at last, have the chance to make it happen,” he said.
And he teased fans: “Fasten your seatbelts and hold onto your hats!”
The new series of the show is due to start on Friday 8 September at 9.30pm on BBC One.
