Fiona O'Caroll doesn't pay attention to Mrs Brown's Boys naysayers, saying "not everything is funny to everybody".

The actress plays Maria Brown in the hit BBC and RTE comedy series and is the daughter of creator Brendan O'Carroll.

Mrs Brown's Boys remains a ratings smash with viewers every Christmas and continues to sell out theatres and arenas across Ireland and the UK with live tours.

In recent years, people have taken to social media to complain about the franchise but Fiona knows this part and parcel of working in the entertainment industry.

She told RSVP Live: "I honestly believe you need that diversity there. You’re not going to please everybody, nor should you.

"Not everybody’s going to like what you do, it’s all down to personal taste.

"I don’t take it personally, I’m performing as a fictional character in a fictional series aimed to make people laugh.

"Not everything is funny to everybody so that’s just the way it is.

"If we all liked the same thing, life would be boring. I don’t read into it."

Mrs Brown's Boys continues to appeal to it's wide-ranging fanbase and that's what matters most to Fiona.

She added: "I enjoy what I do, we all have great fun and that translates on TV and stage.

"Those that do enjoy and come to our shows have a great time.

"Laughter is important and definitely a tonic. It’s a form of escapism that people need.

"If we can keep people laughing, long may we continue."

Mrs Brown's Boys is returning for a brand new mini series which is expected to air later this year and Fiona teased some details about storylines for the show's much loved characters.

"I don't know too much yet, but I've been given little teasers from my dad," she said.

"He told me there a good few storylines happening. Agnes and Winnie go speed-dating!"

Fiona shares children Eli, Felix, Dexter and Isaac with ex-husband and co-star Martin Delany.

Eli and Felix have appeared in a handful of episodes, much like Fiona's brother Danny's sons Jamie and Blake.

Fiona is happy for her children to get involved with the family business if that is what they want to do.

"Eli has been in a couple of Christmas specials, and Felix was about 7 or 8 in his first episode," she said.

"The younger two are dying to get involved but they are not quite ready, I wouldn’t trust them at the moment.

"The older two are great, Eli in particular has a flair for the stage. He is a natural performer and really enjoys it."
