Mrs. Brown’s Boys star Paddy Houlihan doesn't take any notice to the ratings of the show after they dipped at Christmas and New Years. .

The viewing figures for the most recent specials of the BBC sitcom weren’t as high as previous years.

The actor, who plays the character of Dermot Brown, also shared an emotional story after meeting the dad of a fan of the show.

Paddy told RSVP Magazine: "People jump on the ratings and they think they are the be all and end all. The ratings are never mentioned in the BBC or within the team.

"When we started doing Mrs. Brown on TV more than 10 years ago, the figures were huge but now look at how many streaming services there are.

"We are still excited and there is still a buzz with this job."

Paddy and the Mrs Brown's Boys cast are working on a new mini-series, the first since 2013, which is due to air later this year.

He said: "I am very excited because it will be the first time in a few years that the show is not related to Christmas or New Years.

"Brendan has the freedom to write a bit more and explore new ideas because it must be really hard to stay focused on Christmas year after year. It is going to give the show a new lease of life. I don't know when it’s going to air.

"I imagine if we make it in March it will come out in autumn. Don’t hold me to that! We were meant to do this before but it was cancelled because of Covid."

Paddy never gets bored working on the same show because it provides him with job security and he can get the balance right with his wife Emily and their twin daughters.

He said: "There are plenty of people who struggle to get one or two jobs in a year, but we have this security with TV and getting on tour.

"There was a time in my life where I wanted to work everyday of the year. Now that I am a parent I know that the balance is better and you need time off to be at home."

Paddy still gets stopped by fans while he is out and about and one story he was told has stuck with him.

He said: "It was a bit strange at the start and my wife used to point it out, but now I don’t even notice it.

"It is usually nice, I have never had a negative interaction with a fan of the show. They usually want to tell you how much they enjoy it.

"When I was on my way to Dublin Airport to fly to Amsterdam for High Road Low Road I got chatting to the taxi driver. He was about 45 and he said his wife died and he had three kids. One of his daughters is 11 and she had some sort of nervous breakdown when her mum died and she wouldn’t speak.

"They went to different specialists and they tried everything, nobody knew what to do. He was sitting at home one evening and he heard this laughter and there was his daughter watching Mrs. Brown.
"She still needed help, but from that moment on she began interacting with them again. Slowly but surely she got back to herself.

"He said he owed us a bit of thanks and I rang Brendan to tell him the story. Ratings mean nothing when you hear a story like that."
