Mrs. Brown's Boys star Fiona O'Carroll has revealed that plans to film a mini series of the show this year have been scrapped.

It had previously been rumoured that the popular comedy programme would be returning to its roots by airing a series for the first time since 2013 this year.

The new episodes were said to have been recorded in April. However, fans of the show will have to wait until at least 2023 for the project to get off the ground.

Fiona, who plays the character of Maria Brown, said: "Well, you know what this industry is like. There is lots of talk and lots of talk and until it is happening you will never really know. Yes, there is talk.

"We were supposed to be doing a mini series this year but, unfortunately, due to various different reasons it didn't happen.

"So, there is talk of it happening next year, a possible mini series."

Fiona said it is hard to pin everyone down for filming and securing studio time post pandemic is also tricky.

She told hosts Alan Hughes and Muireann O'Connell on Ireland AM : "It is not just down to us, it is down to studio time, it is down to crew and it is down to cast.

"With Covid, it was a massively turbulent time and there is huge backlog and all artists and productions are fighting for time and space.

"It is hard to get that time to make stuff and get a slot. Yes, there is talk but whether it happens, I don't know."

The cast of Mrs. Brown's Boys are going on tour this summer, hitting cities between June and November.

Fiona said: "We are doing a UK tour in June and we are in Dublin in November. I am going to be flat out this year, which is great.

"After not working for so long, I am like 'Oh my God, this is brilliant'.

"I am going straight from the UK tour of Mrs. Brown's Boys into Coppers The Musical for a five week tour."

The Christmas and New Years specials of the show are also being planned ahead of winter.

She said: "We are filming in October, we have set aside dates in October to film those."
