MRS Brown’s Boys is returning to the BBC as a series for the first time in almost a decade.

The last run of the hit comedy, based around the family of Brendan O’Carroll’s foul-mouthed Irish “Mammy” Agnes Brown, aired in 2013.

But a cast source last night confirmed they were booked to film new episodes in April, saying: “Everyone is very excited.

"It’s lovely to be working on another series.

“The cast can’t wait to see Brendan’s scripts.”

The show made its screen debut in 2011 and proved a huge hit with millions of fans, who voted it best sitcom of the 21st century.

It was named best comedy at the National Television Awards three years running.

And its first Christmas special in 2013 pulled in 9.2 million viewers.

Brendan, 66, who writes the show in addition to starring in drag as Agnes, told The Sun in 2020 he had signed a deal securing its place in the Beeb’s festive schedules until 2026.

Also starring Brendan’s wife Jennifer Gibney, 57, and his daughter Fiona O’Carroll, 41, it was made into a film, Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie, in 2014.

And a spin-off chat show, All Round to Mrs Brown’s, aired from 2017 to 2020.

A second source added: “This is something that everyone wants to happen, and we are working out the schedule for 2022/23.”
