Mrs. Brown's Boys' Fiona O'Carroll has admitted there was a lot of hurt when her dad Brendan's marriage ended in 1999.

The show creator and star and wife Doreen Dowdall ended things more than 20 years ago, before marrying his now wife, and co-star, Jenny Gibney in 2005.

Fiona tried to hang on to her own marriage to husband Martin Delany because she remembers how public her own parents break up was.

She didn't want her four sons coming from a broken marriage but, after a lot of time to think, she and Martin, who is also a star of the show, split in December 2018. She revealed the news for the first time last week.

Fiona, who plays Maria, said: "I think I hung on for as long as I did because when my own parents broke up, that was very public, and there was a lot of hurt involved there.

“For me, as a child, coming from a broken marriage, I didn’t want that for my kids."

Fiona's parents have both moved on with new partners and her main focus is being there for her kids.

She added to the RTÉ Guide: “But having said that, my parents are extremely happy now so sometimes you have to go through hard times to get to happier times and as much as I tried my best to make it work, we tried for years and it just got to that point where we both decided, or I decided, it was time.

“I felt that I needed to be a role model for my kids and as much as they weren’t happy about us splitting up, they are OK actually, because with myself and Martin, our main focus is the kids and we didn’t actually tell the kids until we were almost a year separated." Fiona wants to make sure her boys- Felix (14), Eli (12), Isaac (7) and Dexter (6)- are taken care of.

She said: "I try not to look too far into the future. Obviously, I have to try and make provisions for the boys.

"I have to prepare for them, I have to try and make sure there is stuff in place and security for them."

The 41 year old is now able to create and find her own happiness at home and with her sons, especially after the tough lockdown.

She said: "Finding the joy in things on the road to happiness is what I have found over the last few years.

"It is the journey and once I realised that and once I realised that, everything changed for me and now, getting outside for hikes, getting out with my kids, even just watching a movie with my kids and sitting having the chats or those car rides into school, they are those moments I cherish."
