Brendan O’Carroll said he’s determined to enjoy a proper family Christmas after last year’s cancelled celebrations left him “heartbroken”.

The Mrs Brown’s Boys creator, who lives in Florida, said he had a Yuletide to forget in 2020 when he returned to his native Dublin.

The 66-year-old grandfather-of-six and wife Jennifer Gibney had planned a big family reunion.

But the Covid-related restrictions in place at the time left him no option but to cancel his much longed-for family celebration. He admitted: “Last year was a lonely Christmas. Although we came home to Dublin, we couldn’t see the grandchildren. It was heartbreaking. “

However, in an interview with The TV Times, the Finglas-born funnyman insisted he’s determined to make up for last year’s disappointment.

He said: “We’ll be in Dublin again, but this year it’s going to be different - and I can’t wait,. You can’t beat Christmas in Ireland.”

Meanwhile, the veteran comic has told of his sense of joy at being able to film in front of a live audience again for the upcoming Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas special on RTE and the BBC.

Brendan said: “The Christmas Day episode was our first time in front of an audience for two years.

“I can’t tell you what it’s like to walk on to the floor and see people. It was amazing.

“The buzz - they roared, cheered and cackled like they’d been let off the leash!”

And looking ahead to the New Year, the Dubliner - who will once again star as Irish mum Agnes Brown in this year’s festive edition of his award-winning show - added: “It’s going to be busy. We cancelled our live tour in 2019.

“It moved to 2020 and then 2021, and now it’s in 2022. We will also be doing more Christmas specials.”
