Brendan O'Carroll dedicates Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas Special to late RTE star Gay Byrne

EXCLUSIVE: The 65-year-old comic feels the country needs a really good laugh after the year we have had

Top comic Brendan O Carroll is dedicating this year’s Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas Special to his late great friend Gay Byrne.

The down to earth funnyman only ever met the Late Late Show legend twice outside the TV Studios, but they would speak regularly on the phone.

Brendan revealed; “ For whatever reason Gay took a shine to me and took me under his wing. He was always giving me good advice at various points throughout my career, and he always believed in me.

“I would probably never have been as successful only for his help. He maintained if you keep working hard and follow your dream, with the right people around you, you will succeed.”

The 65-year-old comic feels the country needs a really good laugh after the year we have had.

He said;” Covid 19 has had such an impact on so many people, the death, the suffering, the pain.

“It has been a very difficult year for everyone and with this year’s Christmas special we wanted to make people smile again.

He deliberately hasn’t seen the finished edited version but he is pretty confident it is a winner.

“The first time I will see it will be on Christmas night, but I am very confident we have done our jobs and will give all Mrs Brown Boys fans a great laugh.”

The show goes out at 9.45pm on RTE One and 10pm on BBC One. Brendan and the crew have signed a new deal with the BBC to make a few more series of the smash hit comedy.

Gay died over a year ago on November 4,2019 after a lo0ng running battle with prostate cancer.

Brendan added; “I miss our chats, I miss his calls.”

The star will celebrate Christmas with his family at his Florida home.

He hopes to be back doing the Mrs Brown Live Show in Dublin next summer, tickets are still available.
