While 4.6million fans watched a Mrs Brown special on BBC1 on Christmas Day, the actor who plays Grandad was getting treatment in Beaumont Hospital.

Wife Chickie posted a picture of herself with Dermot, aka Bugsy, on Christmas night, telling friends on social media: “Dermo is an awful lot brighter today.. Christmas greetings from Beaumont hospital. Thank you all for your calls, texts and messages.”

Former Mrs Brown star Rory Cowan told us: “I can only hope he has a speedy recovery. Bugsy is great.”

Dermot was also said to be uplifted by the reaction to the Mrs Brown Christmas special, which also aired on RTE One and has been judged to be one best Mrs Brown shows in years.

One viewer posted: “I’m F***ing howling at this.”

PRAYERS PLEA
Dermot’s family had asked for prayers for the actor, who is in his sixties, after he was rushed to hospital and put on tubes by docs after complaining of feeling unwell.

Chickie revealed he was left “exhausted” after treatment for cancer.

She said: “What we didn’t want to happen, happened. Dermo has been hospitalised to rehydrate him and be put on a feeding tube.

“The radiation and chemo has him exhausted and unable to eat. We will have a very subdued time this year as the core of the family will not be there to relax and celebrate with us.”

And Dermot’s daughter Sharon also told of her concern as she posted a picture of her beloved dad on social media.

She said: “This is my dad we all love so much, he’s been rushed into hospital this morning. I wouldn’t normally put this on facebook.

“But I’m asking will you all say a prayer he gets better soon. He has six beautiful grand children who love him so much.

“He’s their hero . . . (Dad your a fighter and we all love you more than you will ever know) . . . So can you all keep him in your prayers please. Love from all our family.”

Contacted by the Irish Sun, a spokeswoman for Mrs Brown’s Boys said they would not be commenting on the cast member’s illness which they described a “private matter”.
