Mrs Brown’s Boys star Brendan O’Carroll reveals he wasn’t paid to roast former FAI chief John Delaney at his 50th birthday bash

COMEDIAN Brendan O’Carroll has revealed he wasn’t paid to deliver an impromptu ‘roast’ of John Delaney at his 50th birthday party in Mount Juliet.

The Mrs Brown star said he had been invited to the bash, which featured a birthday cake replica of the Aviva Stadium, organised by FAI chief Delaney’s partner Emma.

Brendan told the Irish Sun: “Like everyone else Jenny and I were invited guests at John’s 50th birthday party.

“We were invited by Emma, not John, as I think the party was a surprise for John. My performance was a spontaneous roast of John which I was delighted to do for a bit of craic. John and Emma are friends of ours.”

We revealed yesterday embattled Delaney has been urged to step down from the board of the Aviva Stadium while his company credit card and phone have been stopped.

TDs also want FAI president Donal Conway and honorary secretary Michael Cody to quit following a number of revelations about the footie group’s finances.

Brendan says the only cash dealing he’s had with Delaney is to support a programme to have kids’ hearts tested in a bid to prevent Sudden Adult Death syndrome.

He said: “The only financial transaction between ourselves and John Delaney or the FAI is the €500,000 we are putting in to fund Dr Alan Byrne’s programme to have young boys and girl football players hearts tested in an effort to prevent SAD.”

The 63-year-old visited the FAI HQ last October to launch the cardiac screening for all children and adolescents from the National League academies, and also revealed the personal story that had inspired him to help.

He said: “We have six grandsons, one of them, I’d rather not mention his name, was aged ten and out playing schoolboy football when he got a ball in the stomach.

“It badly winded him and he passed out and was taken to hospital. We found out that this triggered diabetes. I thought to myself, ‘what if that had been heart failure?’ There has to be a way we (Mrs Brown’s Boys) can get involved to make sure that small clubs can get their kids screened.

“The FAI’s came to us with a programme where they could screen a thousand kids, and we said what would it cost to do them all, over six years which is what we are doing.”
