Rory Cowan has posted a heartfelt message on social media thanking all those for their kind words following the death of his mother.

The former Mrs Brown's Boys star's mum Esther passed away last week aged 85.

A funeral service for Esther took place last Thursday at the Church of the Ascension of the Lord in Balally, south Dublin.

Tributes for Mrs Cowan were flooding in last week and Rory has thanked the public for their words of support on behalf of the family.

He tweeted: "Thank you all for all the lovely messages you sent me since my mother died last week.

"I really appreciate them. I read them all and I’m very touched by your kindness to me and my family."

The actor was visibly emotional as he spoke at the mass last week.

Rory also shared a hilarious story about the time his mother met Cliff Richard and spent hours talking to him - about the trade union movement in Ireland.

He said: "She was chatting away to Cliff for hours and I was talking to everyone else and hoping that she wasn't boring him to death.

"I said to her afterwards 'what were you talking about?' and she said the trade union movement.

"He said 'no, I loved it. My whole life since 1959 is just talking about showbusiness. Your mother didn't mention it once.' That was like a breathe of fresh air to him."

Esther also met President Michael D Higgins at a play Rory brought her to. The pair shared chocolates and talked about getting the flu jab.

"That was my mother. What happened outside her window, it didn't matter because she would talk about what she knew about. She would talk about her family, because she loved her family."

Caring Rory left his role on the hit show in June 2017 so he could sped more time with his cherished mother, who had been suffering from dementia.
