Comedian Brendan O’Carroll has admitted that he was so nervous the first time he appeared on the Late Late Show that he was vomiting backstage.

However, the Mrs Brown’s Boys star has credited his appearance on the show with legendary broadcaster Gay Byrne as giving him his first big break in the industry.

“I was throwing up beforehand,” Brendan revealed. “Because the Late Late is a big opportunity, but there is nowhere to hide —people get found out on it.”

But Brendan said he used the show as a “chance to shine” — and has since gone on to become one of the country’s biggest comedians.

However, he admits he has “no f**king idea” why his show, Mrs Browns Boys, has become such a big hit after he spent years slogging away before that.

Brendan said in an interview: “I get that comedy was seen as the new rock and roll. Every generation has its own comedy, just like every generation has its own music. But the problem is, people aren’t dying at 40 and 50 anymore.

“So, all of a sudden, the comedy that came along left a whole audience behind. And we tapped into that.” Meanwhile, Brendan said he didn’t care about critics who thought the show was low-brow.

He added: “I’ve never, ever written for a critic. Never. I write for the audience. Somebody told me once that you’re more Shakespeare than anything else. Shakespeare didn’t write for the royal family.

“He wrote for the penny-paying public... and I write...for them.”
