Mrs. Brown's Fiona O'Carroll feels blessed to get on well with ex-husband Martin 'There's no animosity'

"At the same time, it is not easy but you have to handle it in the best way that you can. We were separated for a year before we told the kids because we wanted to make sure everything was in place before we told them"

Mrs. Brown's Boys star Fiona O'Carroll feels blessed to get on well with her ex-husband Martin Delany.

The couple revealed news of their marriage breakdown last December, but she says there are still a family.

They have an open and honest relationship and, for them, their four kids are their priority.

Fiona told RSVP Live: "I am also blessed to have an ex-husband who I get on very well with and we co-parent very well together too. We always put the kids first.

"When my role in Coppers The Musical came up I needed to work out how I was going to manage that with the kids.

"He said he would take them for two weeks during the rehearsal week and the first week of the show. They come back to Ireland tomorrow and they will be in the audience on Thursday night and I am so excited."

Fiona and Martin ended their marriage in 2018, but it only became public last year. Fiona felt no sense of relief when she opened up because she had been dealing with the split for some time.

She said: "For me, it is old news and I know that is the same for my ex-husband. We will be four years separated in December.

"At the same time, it is not easy but you have to handle it in the best way that you can. We were separated for a year before we told the kids because we wanted to make sure everything was in place before we told them.

"We wanted their routine to stay the same and we wanted nothing to change. We wanted them to be secure, safe and settled before we broke the news. We didn’t want their world to change. I am lucky that Martin and I get on and we are able to have open and honest communication."

Fiona and Martin are still in each other's lives, which is very important for their four sons.

She added: "There is no animosity between us, which is fantastic. We wanted each other to be happy. We are still a family, we still take holidays together, we still go for meals together and when Martin is home he will stay with me and the boys."

Fiona is back on stage this summer in her first musical role as Gretchen Akerman in Copper Face Jacks: The Musical.

She said: "I was delighted to be asked, but I was a bit nervous as well. A lot of the cast members have done this before. Luckily, I wasn’t the only newbie coming in, there are five other new actors.

"The show has become iconic and the audience come and expect the best. You have a lot to live up to when you step into somebody else's shoes and you also want to bring something different to it at the same time.

"Being in a musical was always a dream of mine. When this came along it was like the universe was just handing it to me. The dates fitted in so well, everything just synchronised."

Her character is a bit of drama queen.

The mum of four explained: "She is the catalyst for stirring things up a little bit. She is pregnant and I have had four children. I have experienced being pregnant in real life and I have played being pregnant as an actor before. In terms of walking around with a big belly, I am well used to that."
