One of the stars of Mrs Brown’s Boys has revealed the reason why a new series was cancelled this year.

Fiona O’Carroll, who plays Maria Brown, addressed the rumours that the comedy would be making a return for a proper series this year for the first time since 2013.

With reports suggesting the new episodes were filmed in April, O’Carroll told Ireland AM that fans will be waiting until 2023 to see what happens next to the chaotic family.

‘We were supposed to be doing a mini series this year but, unfortunately, due to various different reasons it didn’t happen. So, there is talk of it happening next year, a possible mini series,’ she said.

Speaking to Alan Hughes and Muireann O’Connell, O’Carroll added that it’s hard to find time to unite the cast as a result of the pandemic.

She explained: ‘It is not just down to us, it is down to studio time, it is down to crew and it is down to cast.

‘With Covid, it was a massively turbulent time and there is huge backlog and all artists and productions are fighting for time and space.

‘It is hard to get that time to make stuff and get a slot. Yes, there is talk but whether it happens, I don’t know.’

Those who just can’t wait to get their Mrs Brown’s Boys fix will be pleased to know the gang will be going on tour this year, with a Dublin show penned in for the the 3Arena in November.

‘We are doing a UK tour in June and we are in Dublin in November. I am going to be flat out this year, which is great.

‘After not working for so long, I am like “Oh my God, this is brilliant”. I am going straight from the UK tour of Mrs. Brown’s Boys into Coppers The Musical for a five week tour,’ she said.

Anyone who can’t make it to the shows will have to wait until the Christmas and New Years specials to see the iconic characters, with Fiona confirming they’ll be filming in October.
