Brendan O’Carroll: ‘This is a bad idea’ Mrs Browns Boys star addresses family disagreement

BRENDAN O'CARROLL - who plays Agnes Brown on All Round to Mrs Browns - has spoken out about the moment his son and co-star Danny O'Carroll urged him not to take Mrs Brown's Boys on tour, as he feared it was a "bad idea".

Brendan O’Carroll, 64, famously works alongside his family, including his wife Jennifer Gibney, in his comedy shows Mrs Browns Boys and All Round to Mrs Brown's. Last year, he took the cast on tour across the UK for Mrs Brown's Boys D'Musical.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, he admitted his son Danny O’Carroll, 36, who plays Buster Brady, told him going on tour was a “bad idea”.

But after hearing the response from fans on the first night, Brendan said his son retracted his comment.

He said: “When we said we were going to do Mrs Browns the musical, Danny was the one who said, ‘I think this is a bad idea’.

“And then on the opening night, he was the first one to put his hand on my shoulder and say, ‘This is the best thing you’ve ever written, it’s the funniest ever’.

“It's no harm to have a little bit of doubt in there.”

The actor and comedian went on to say that despite the family working together, they rarely disagree on his ideas.

But, he admitted they will call him out if need be.

“They’re not afraid to go, ‘Listen I don’t know if this will work dad’ and I’ll have a look at it again, but if I think it will, then we carry on with it," he divulged.

“We’re not the Waltons you know, but it’s great.

“It’s not just on TV that we work together, we work together on tour.

“We have our six grandchildren with us, we have two nannies, two babysitters, a tutor, but every single morning, I get to see my grandkids and have a cup of tea.”

Brendan first brought Mrs Brown’s Boys to screens in 2011 and it has proved to be a hit with viewers ever since.

The actor admitted he was “completely shocked” by the reaction from fans when he first started the show.

He went on to explain how the programme evolved, admitting it was a slow development.

Brendan said before giving Danny the role as Buster, he “came on the road sweeping the stage and was a runner”.

Danny moved on to help the team with the lighting before becoming a regular member of the cast.

“It was the same with Fiona [his daughter] and Eric, my youngest son, he was about seven when we started doing Mrs Brown's, he now directs the show and he’s 28,” he added.

Following a successful stint on the show, he brought All Round to Mrs Browns to screens in 2017.

Tonight, Brendan and Jenny will be joined by guests Joel Dommett, Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes.

All Round To Mrs Browns continues tonight at 9.15pm on BBC One.
