Heartbroken Johnny Vegas announces his beloved mum Patricia has died

Johnny Vegas broke the news of his mother's death with a loving tribute in which he describes her as a "bit of a character"

Johnny Vegas' mum Patricia Pennington died in her sleep on Sunday, he has announced.

The actor, 49, said his late mother had been discharged from St Helens Whiston hospital on November 13.

Patricia had major surgery in the first week of November before she was discharged from the hospital, in Rainhill.

It is not known what Ma Vegas had surgery for in early November.

Johnny broke the news of her death on his Twitter account with his 410.4K followers on Tuesday, days after she had died.

As he shared the news, the comedian paid tribute to his late mother as he admitted he was "incapable of processing" her death.

In a loving tribute, he described his late mother as a "bit of a character" and he said she was "the best".

He wrote: "With a kind of deep regret that I’m still incapable of processing, I have to confirm that Ma Vegas, Patricia, passed away last Sunday, peacefully in her sleep.

"To say she was a bit of a character would be too huge an underestimation. As a Mum I dare to argue I had the best x."

The sad news followed Johnny's claims his mum was turned away from A&E after she had to wait three hours for an ambulance to arrive.

The comedian's mother Patricia was in and out of hospital but at one time the emergency department was "full to capacity".

He took to Twitter to accuse the Conservative government and Prime Minister Boris Johnson of "neglect" and a "blatant drive to privatise" the NHS.

Johnny wrote: "3 hour wait on an ambulance but A&E had to close its doors, full to capacity. Why be angry at the incredible folk working under unbelievable stress?

"I remain grateful, my bitterness belongs to @BorisJohnson @Conservatives at your neglect of our @NHSuk & blatant drive to privatise."
