Mrs. Brown’s Boys is red-hot favourite to be the UK’s most watched Christmas show

Christmas TV is all about The Queen’s Speech, classic films and… the Mrs. Brown’s Boys Christmas special?

No matter what they fill their schedule with on 25 December, the BBC can always be safe in the knowledge that it’s in for a ratings hit with the divisive Brendan O’Carroll-created sitcom’s annual special. The past three Mrs. Brown’s Boys Christmas specials have all pulled in over six million viewers overnight, and over nine million consolidated viewers (which takes into account catch-up watchers) when all is said and done.

And bookmakers are already hedging their bets that the 2018 Mrs. Brown’s Boys Christmas special will be the most-watched programme on Christmas Day. Coral have priced that much happening at 6-4, placing it ahead of the Strictly festive special (2-1), Call The Midwife (3-1) and Eastenders (7-2). ‘Mrs. Brown’s Boys was a surprise winner of top spot last Christmas Day but it’s back again for more this time and we’re expecting it to prove just as popular,’ Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead explained. ‘We make it the favourite to be the nation’s favourite show this year.’

Aitkenhead added: ‘The BBC had eight of the 10 most watched programmes last year and that gives us a few clues as to where the most watched might come from this year. ‘Eastenders is always popular and something like Michael McIntyre’s Christmas Show could pull in a lot of viewers too.’ So what will come of the bookies’ predictions: will the Mrs. Brown’s Boys special be a cracker or a turkey with viewers this Christmas? We’ll find out soon enough…

The Mrs. Brown’s Boys Christmas special airs on 25 December at 10:15pm on BBC One.
