MYTAXI drivers can secure grants of up to €8,500 to become wheelchair accessible – after Rory Cowan blasted a lack of available accessible cabs.
Drivers can now secure wheelchair accessible and electric vehicle grants of over €15,000 as part of a range of new incentives available in conjunction with the National Transport Authority and Department of Transport.
Cowan slammed the lack of wheelchair accessible cabs
TV star Rory’s mum Esther is wheelchair bound and has dementia, but it boosts her mood when she is able to get out and about with either her children or her carer.
But Rory said she was left abandoned in another case of non-equal rights for those with disabilities.
Rory revealed: “The carer was saying with the summer coming she would be able to take my mother out in the wheelchair because she is going stir crazy in the house all the time.
“Last Wednesday she took her out because it was sunny, so she walked her up to the church and then there is an old folk’s thing after the Mass and my mother goes every Wednesday.
“While she was there it started to piss down with rain and she decided to ring a taxi and none were available.
“At 1.29pm, the taxi that was due to come cancelled, she could see it coming and then it cancelled, one minute before it was due to arrive.
“So she was stuck in a pub, with dementia, waiting on a taxi and it is raining outside and she has no way of getting home.”
Last year there were just 1,519 wheelchair accessible vehicles in the whole country.
However MyTaxi have already added 100 new vehicles in the last three months and are now hoping to add more.
