Mrs Brown’s Boys fans demand Rory Cowan return after his replacement fails to impress

The actor left the hilarious BBC show this summer after 26 years

FANS of rib-tickling comedy Mrs Brown's Boys were left OUTRAGED as Rory Cowan's replacement fell short of the mark in the show's festive special.

The bawdy BBC programme, based on the life of an Irish 'mammy' Agnes (Brendan O’Carroll) and her children, sparked a frenzy of reaction as actor Damien McKiernan made his debut as Rory Brown.

Fans of Mrs Brown's Boys were left outraged at the new actor playing much-loved Rory Brown

The switch was made earlier this year when Rory  left the show after 26 years revealing he "wasn't happy" in the role.

He later denied that he had fallen out with Brendan, who plays his mum, telling the Irish Mirror: “I got tired of it, I haven’t been happy for the last two years working there.

“There was no row with Brendan, there was no dispute over money or anything, in fact quite the opposite, I got so well paid that it enabled me to be able to leave, I didn’t need to stay.”

In the meantime, script-writers planned a clever cosmetic surgery plotline to explain his sudden change of appearance.

Rory, the son of matriarch Agnes, was originally played by Rory Cowan

Agnes tapped her son's bandages in a hilarious scene

Last night, Rory arrived home with his face bandaged up before removing them to reveal his new face – as his family look on.

Everyone seems rather impressed apart from matriarch Agnes, who looks pretty shocked.

At the time of filming, Brendan  told RTÉ Radio :"The reveal is very, very good."

Yet fans simply didn't agree.

One part of the festive special aired last night

Actor Rory denied falling out with Brendan O'Carroll, who plays Agnes

They took to Twitter in their droves to remark on their disappointment at Rory

One moaned: "Missed @1rorycowan on #MrsBrownsBoys last night Rory was my favourite character he’s just not the same now he’s not as funny with the new guy 😞" as another quizzed: "In all seriousness who is the new actor playing Rory???? #MrsBrownsBoys."

A third put: "Not impressed with the new Rory at all I'm sure he is a good guy but he is nothing like the original and I don't mean looks I mean fun and laughter and a great personality in the show what a shame."

Another commented: "Just watched last nights #MrsBrownsBoys....I know they had to do something after Rory left, but this new one is awful. Such a disappointment 🙁"
